Building a Thriving Photography Business: A Conversation with Morgan Leatherwood

Building a Thriving Photography Business: A Conversation with Morgan Leatherwood

Listen on Apple, Spotify, and Google Podcasts

I’m so excited because I have one of my best friends, Morgan Leatherwood on the podcast today! Morgan is a former teacher turned photographer based in Charlotte, North Carolina, and is the force behind Morgan Amanda Photography. She started off as a wedding photographer and has since stepped away to focus primarily on small business branding and family portraits in her studio. Beyond being a photographer,, she also hosts 2 podcasts, Queen City Connect and Love That For You.

During our conversation, Morgan shares her journey of going full-time in her photography business, and how she was able to make that transition away from a shoot-and-burn photographer to offering her clients a deeper, more valuable experience.

She also emphasizes the importance of knowing your worth and setting your business up in a way that helps you serve your clients effectively. It’s important to put yourself in a position where you align your values with what you are offering, so you don’t get burnt out. And while it can be hard to do that, it’s so worth it!

She shares the significance of networking, with a genuine interest in getting to know the people you are connecting with. Morgan discusses her experiences with reaching out to different small businesses, meeting up with them for coffee, and how these casual conversations turned into real friendships. It’s a reminder that you never know what connections you can make if you choose to put yourself out there.

Morgan ends with this advice if you’re feeling stuck as a shoot-and-burn photographer: See that you are doing great work. You have put a lot of effort into being where you are today. You are worth so much more than you think you are. It is possible to create a sustainable business that both aligns with your values and serves your clients well.

In this episode, we chat about:

  • Morgan’s journey into photography
  • The growth she made from hiring a coach
  • Making the shift from photographer to businesswoman
  • How Morgan built connections when she moved to a new city
  • Transitioning from shoot-and-burn photographer to full-service photographer
  • Providing an incredible client experience
  • Charging your worth
